Among
the domestic car companies, times are tough these days but the General
Motors Corporation, with Chairman Rick Wagoner's seeming steady hands on
the wheel and his foot carefully on the gas, may be seeing the light at
the end of the tunnel and, at this point in time, seems in better shape
that its competitor, Ford Motor Company. Besides heading up the team
which is guiding GM through these tough times, Mr. Wagoner is, also, a
big supporter of the coming new Camaro.

Athens Coney Island to sample one of its yummy hot
dogs.

Every year in Mid-August a very unique automotive event takes
place in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak. Called the "Woodward
Avenue Dream Cruise" it's perhaps the world's largest and
certainly the world's greatest rolling car show. Hundreds of
thousands of people attend and tens of thousands of cars
participate. Obviously, as Detroit is the center of the car
industry in North America, GM has very large and highly visible
presence at the Dream Cruise. Friday night of the Dream Cruise
weekend is when GM puts high-profile show cars on display at
various locations along Woodward Avenue and some of those cars
actually do some cruising.
To the delight of the tens of
thousand of Camaro fans present at the Dream Cruise, Wagoner
drove the 2009 Camaro Concept Car for a stretch of Woodward
Avenue and ended his run at Athens Coney Island, a historic
"diner" style restaurant which has been popular with hot rodders
for many years and serves as GM's headquarters on Friday night
of the Dream Cruise weekend. Wagoner's driving the Camaro
Concept was fitting as, the week before, he announced the
Camaro's return to production. After parking the car, then
pausing to take in the scene on Athens' lot, Wagoner looked like
a happy guy. Driving a little of the Dream Cruise had to have
been a welcome distraction from the daily stress of meeting the
challenge of leading GM's turnaround. |
